Nature Programs


Willowhaven Interpretive Center offers a wide variety of programs for children, teens, adults and families.  Programs include nature hikes, owl pellet dissections, and more. Please pre-register for all programs. Programs that do not meet a minimum enrollment will be cancelled.

Here is a highlight of this summers programs:

Full Moon Hike
Ages: All Ages
Date: Friday, July 18
Time: 8:30- 9:30 p.m.
Fee: $4 per person or $10 per family of 4

  Watercolor Landscapes with Diana Sweeney of Diana's Art Club
Ages: 8-15 years
Date(s): Thursday July 17, Thursday August 7 and Tuesday August 12
Time: 10:00- 11:15 p.m.
Fee per class: Residents* $10/Non-residents $12
Outdoor Skills Workshop
Ages: 7-12 years
Date: Friday, August 15
Time: 6:30- 9:00 p.m.
Fee per class: Residents* $8/Non-residents $11

  Nature Drawing Class with Diana Sweeney of Diana's Art Club
Ages: 6-12 years
Date(s): Tuesday. July 22 and Friday August 22
Time: 10:00- 11:15 p.m.
Fee per class: Residents* $8/Non-residents $10
     
*Resident rate applies for children and/or adults who's permanent residence is in Bourbonnais Township. This includes the residents of Bradley, Bourbonnais, St. George and parts of Kankakee.

Naturalist Camps

Be a part of interactive and engaging experiences in these exciting youth camps designed to get children excited and interested in the natural world. Participants will explore prairie, woodland and aquatic eco-systems as well as participate in activities, games, crafts, field trips and more.

Sign up for one camp or sign up for all six for an entire summer of fun and exploration!

 

Survival and Outdoor Skills Camp
Camp includes a week of developing your senses, finding your way around outdoors, learning the basics of first aid, fire safety, and learn how to build a shelter. Camps will include outdoor hikes so campers are asked to be prepared with hiking shoes and appropriate clothing. Parents are asked to provide a sack lunch for campers.

Wildlife Camp
Learn about the different animal kingdoms, get hands on with animals at the interpretive center and learn about the local wildlife found in Illinois. Campers will enjoy a trip to Brookfield zoo, hike outdoors and see live animal demonstrations by local interpreters. Campers must wear hiking shoes and appropriate clothing to camp. Parents are asked to provide a sack lunch for campers.

Conservation Camp
Learn about Illinois endangered species, recycling, and wildlife management. Campers will enjoy a trip to Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie as well as daily hikes, games, crafts and more. Camps will include outdoor hikes so campers are asked to be prepared with hiking shoes and appropriate clothing. Parents are asked to provide a sack lunch for campers.

Astronomy Camp
Your child will be fascinated by the out-of-this-world activities this new camp has to offer. Children will learn about constellations, planets, moons, comets, asteroids and more. All campers will receive materials to take home from NASA's JPL laboratories . Parents are asked to provide a sack lunch for campers.

Natural History Camp
Check out this camp that takes a look into the past. Camp will highlight ancient cultures of Native American tribes across North America, what the Illinois looked like when Mastodons roamed, and strange fossils that can be found in your own backyard. Each day will be filled with games, activities, crafts and outdoor hikes so campers are asked to be prepared with hiking shoes and appropriate clothing. Parents are asked to provide a sack lunch for campers.

Park Ranger Camp
Do you have what it takes to be a park ranger. This two-week camp is designed to have kids protecting and preserving our parks and open space. Camps will include outdoor hikes so campers are asked to be prepared with hiking shoes and appropriate clothing. Parents are asked to provide a sack lunch for campers.

Special programs are available to scouts, school, and community groups. The programs can be tailored to age and grade levels on a variety of nature related topics.

2008 School/Group programs are here and specially tailored to Illinois Learning Standards! Willowhaven Interpretive Center offers programs for K-12th grade on a variety of nature related topics. Programs are lead by interpretive center staff and are designed to meet Illinois Learning Standards. Some programs are seasonal and/or weather depending so please contact the Willowhaven program coordinator for details and availability.
