This year's featured winerys

Prairie State Winery
One time school teachers, Rick and Maria Mamoser decided to forgo the long commute into the suburbs for a “simpler life” as business owners. Prairie State Mercantile opened at their current location in July, 1998. Selling finer goods, including wine, made exclusively in Illinois (The Prairie State), they were on the leading edge of the “keep it local” movement, winning multiple statewide awards for their concept.

Prairie State Winery soon followed (fall of 1999), expanding the concept by producing wines made exclusively from Illinois grown grapes. With their home winemaking experience, science background, and immersion into national wine curriculum, they soon started garnering many awards for their wines as well. With the first vintage of only 500 gallons to the most recent vintages of nearly 10,000 gallons, Rick and Maria continue to promote the philosophy of “Think Globally, Drink Locally.”

Lynfred Winery, Inc.
Founded by Fred and Lynn Koehler, in Roselle, IL in October, 1979, Lynfred Winery is the oldest and largest, continuously-operating, bonded winery in the state, producing over 50 varietals and 25,000 cases per year.

On an Acre of land once owned by Colonel Roselle Hough, Lynfred Winery started in a historic house originally built in 1912 by the Hattendorf family.  The Koehlers restored the house and organized a cellar.  The cellar walls, more than 18 inches thick, provide ideal temperature control for aging wines.
In April, 2002 the old house became a private residence.  The winery, connected by a vaulted barrel-aging tunnel, increased wine production and added storage facilities.  A tasting room, gift shop, and an elaborate and exclusive four-suite bed and breakfast were added.

Shawnee Winery
Come relax with us a while and enjoy the lovely southern Illinois down-home atmosphere. Make yourself comfortable in our tasting room or have a seat outside on our country porch.
Just Exactly... Who Are We?

Shawnee Winery Cooperative was formed to create a market for small grape growers in the southern Illinois area. The idea was to develop a secure market for each year's harvest and to provide a value added bonus of patronage from the sale of wine made from the members' grapes. With major support from the USDA and the State of Illinois, Shawnee Winery has become a reality.

The history of winemaking in Illinois began around 1830 and by the early 1900's, Illinois had grown to be the fourth largest grape growing state in the United States. After Prohibition was enacted, almost all of the vineyards in the State were destroyed. Only in the last few years has the industry experienced resurgence in grape production.

  August Hill Winery
August Hill Winery was founded by Sean Ginocchio and Mark and Teri Wenzel.

Standing on the land once tilled by his grandfather, Mark wanted to capture August (Augie) Engelhaupt's, insatiable passion and share it with others and began studying wine making. Together Sean and Mark created the vision for August Hill Winery, a company with a passion for creation. If you look closely at the August Hill logo, you'll see a bit of Augie, as the "A" comes from his personal signature!

Sean's wife, Tara, continues to create her inspiring paintings that are a part of our labels, marketing materials, and tasting room gallery.

Mark and Teri Wenzel continue to operate the vineyard and winery as well as the August Hill Winery Tasting Room in historic downtown Utica , just minutes from Starved Rock State Park . At the tasting room, visitors can enjoy August Hill Wines and other handcrafted creations, including paintings, sculpture, glass art, and more from a select group of featured artists.

Wine Tasting Auction Winner

  Illinois River Winery
The Illinois River Winery was founded in 1998 with the establishment of Starved Rock Vineyards by Gregg Kane. At the Winery, Gregg helps keep the focus on artistic quality instead of formula winemaking. Gregg's agricultural roots and lean manufacturing background have served the vineyards and winery well over the years. Visitors to the winery are much more likely to find Gregg on a tractor or in the wine lab than in his office. He wouldn't have it any other way.

Our success has not been due to only one person's efforts or one person's vision: rather, many people have contributed much over the years.
